Padded Picture Instructions
These distinctive
3D pictures are very appealing whether made for one's own home or as
a personal present for friends and family.
I learnt how to make the little girl at a craft class and used the same
principles to design further pictures. Having made one for my own home
I found that visitors and family fell in love with it and wanted me
to make them one.
Many years down the line a friend of mine still makes and sells them as a profitable sideline.
All the designs in the e-book (12 in total) include full size patterns. The pictures are made up of prepared shapes, glued onto a fabric background that is stretched onto an embroidery or flexi hoop. It is imperative to prepare all the separate pieces before the picture is started.
The instructions below are for the little girl picture shown to the right. You will need to download the .pdf file of the pattern and print it.
Requirements:
10" (25 cms) embroidery or flexi hoop, which are available at most craft stores.
One 12" (30 cms) square of polycotton (A), the colour of this does not matter as it will not be seen from the front.
One 12" (30 cms) square of polycotton (B), this should be in the colour of your choice, as it will form the background of the picture.
One 12" (25 cms) square of 6oz wadding that will be sandwiched between the squares of polycotton to produce a padded effect.
50 cms of fabric of your choice for the picture plus small amounts of wadding.
20 cms of plain polycotton for the petticoat and apron.
1 metre of gathered lace 0.5" (12 mm) wide.
50 cms of ribbon 0.25" (6 mm) wide.
Felt for boots and 6 tiny beads for buttons.
Small amount synthetic dolls hair, which is available at most craft stores.
Small posy of artificial flowers.
Glue gun or bottle of P.V.A. glue.
Cardboard, cereal packets are ideal.
Preparing
the Background:
- Remove the outer ring of the embroidery or flexi hoop.
- Place square A of polycotton right side down, the square of wadding
and square B of polycotton, right side up, centrally over the inner
ring.

Refers to step 2 Refers to step 3 - Place the outer ring over the layers of fabric and the inner ring. Press down to secure all the layers of fabric making sure they are taut. If using an embroidery hoop tighten the screw up to hold the hoop together.
- Trim all the layers of fabric closely on the back of the hoop.
Preparing
the Pieces:
- Either trace all the pieces from the pattern page or print the pattern page and cut out the shapes.
- On the pattern there is a key to preparing each piece.
- P is for padded which means that this piece must be cut in cardboard.
Cut the same shape and size in 6 oz wadding. Place the cardboard onto
the right side of the fabric and cut out adding 0.75" (18 mm)
around all edges. Work a row of small running stitches around the
edge of the fabric. Place the wadding and then the cardboard onto
the wrong side of the fabric and pull up both ends of the running
threads. Knot the threads to secure. Oversew all the edges of fabric
across the wrong side to maintain the shape of the cardboard.

Placing the layers together Oversewing edges - C is for covered which means the same process as above but omitting the wadding.
- F is for felt which means the shape is just cut out in felt.
- Where there are dots on the pattern pieces beads are stitched through all thicknesses.
Making
the Little Girl Picture:
- Cut out 2 boot shapes in felt and glue or stitch beads in the relevant positions. This is to simulate buttons.
- Prepare the body, arm, hat and peak. Glue or stitch a length of 0.5" (12 mm) gathered lace along the curved edge of the peak.
- For the apron, cut a rectangle of plain polycotton 10" (25 cms) wide by 2.25" (57 mm) long. Turn in 0.25" (6 mm) at each side edge and stitch. Turn up 0.25" (6 mm) at the lower edge, attach a length of 0.5" (12 mm) gathered lace to the wrong side and stitch. Work a row of small running stitches close to the top edge and gather to 1" (2.5 cms) wide. This will form the waist of the apron.
- For the skirt, cut a rectangle of patterned fabric 20" (50 cms) wide and 4" (10 cms) long. Turn in 0.25" (6 mm) on side and bottom edges and stitch.
- For the petticoat, cut a rectangle of plain fabric 20" (50 cms) wide and 4" (10 cms) long. Turn in 0.25" (6 mm) hem on side edges and stitch. Turn up 0.25" (6 mm) at the lower edge, attach a length of 0.5" (12 mm) gathered lace to the wrong side and stitch.
Place
the petticoat on a flat surface right side up. Place the skirt on
top right side up matching the raw edges at the top and work a row
of small running stitches close to the top edge through both thicknesses
and gather to 1" (2.5 cms) wide. This will form the waist.- Place the hat, peak, skirt, body and boots onto the prepared embroidery hoop making sure that the screw or ring on the hoop is centrally at the top. Arrange the pieces until they are central and you are happy with the result.
- Remove the skirt and place a small amount of glue on the back of the body and press in place.
- Glue the hat and peak in place with glue in the centre only.
Cut
a length of ribbon 4" (10 cms) long and glue over the join between
the hat and peak. Tuck the ends in and glue.- Glue a small amount of hair at the bottom left hand side of the hat, trailing it out towards the back.
- Glue the gathered edge of the skirt and petticoat onto the bottom edge of the body.
- Glue the gathered edge of the apron onto the body just above the skirt.
- Glue the arm onto the body to cover the raw edge of the apron.
Glue
the posy of flowers at the wrist end of the arm.- Glue the boots into position at the lower edge of the skirt.
- Make a small bow in the centre of the length of ribbon and glue the bow to the back of the waist just below the arm. Trim the ends of the ribbon and glue them to the edge of the hoop.
- Arrange the skirt and petticoat and glue the side hems in place.
