Gathered Tieback Instructions
These
simple gathered tie backs can be made from a single rectangle of fabric
so there is no need for a template.
However, by adding a second, narrower rectangle in a contrasting, coordinating or matching fabric, a layered look can be achieved.
A length of elastic threaded through a channel in the centre gathers the fabric to the required length.
The instructions below are for a pair of double layered gathered tie backs of 4" (10 cms) wide, but the width can be adjusted to suit your own requirements.

Requirements:
Fabric of your choice in either 1 or 2 colours.
2 lengths of elastic approximately 0.5" (12mm) wide and the length of the finished tie backs plus 1" (2.5 cms) for neatening.
Matching thread.
4 curtain hooks or D rings, approximately 1” (2.5 cms) in diameter.
2 tie back hooks.
Making a Gathered Tie Back:
- Cut 1 piece of fabric 5" (12.5 cms) wide and twice the finished length plus 1" (2.5 cms) for hems.
- For a double layered tie back cut a contrasting piece of fabric 3" (7.5 cms) wide and twice the finished length plus 1" (2.5 cms) for hems.
- Turn a double 0.25" (6 mm) hem on all 4 sides of each piece, pin and stitch in place. Press.
- For a double layered tie back, place the wider piece of fabric on a flat surface, right side up. Place the other piece of fabric on top, right side up making sure that it is in the centre.
- Measure across the width and pin the centre point all along the length of the tie back.
Mark
a line 0.25" (6 mm) each side of the centre point along the length.- Stitch along the two outer lines through all thicknesses to make a channel.
- Thread the elastic through the centre channel and adjust the gathers evenly.
- Turn 0.5" (12 mm) of elastic to the back of the tie back at each end.
- Repeat for the other tie back.
- Position the tie back hooks, at the required height, at each side of the window and hang the tie backs.
